Senator Benjie E. Wimberly (D-35) today issued the following statement:
"The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy. Today’s Supreme Court decision weakening the Voting Rights Act is deeply concerning and represents a step backward in the ongoing fight to ensure fair and equal access to the ballot.
“For decades, the Voting Rights Act has served as a critical safeguard against discrimination, protecting communities that have faced barriers to participation in our democratic process. Eroding these protections risks silencing voices and undermining the principle that every vote should carry equal weight.
“In New Jersey, we have made meaningful progress toward expanding access to voting and strengthening trust in our elections. That work must continue. We cannot take for granted the rights that so many fought to secure.
“Now more than ever, states must lead and remain committed to protecting voters, expanding access, and ensuring that our democratic systems reflect the voices of all people, not just a few.
“Our democracy is strongest when everyone can participate fully and freely. That is a responsibility we all share, and one we must continue to uphold.”
