Showdown at the VFW Hall: At Least Four to Vie Tonight for GOP Nod for Bergen Sheriff

Bergen GOP Chairman Jack Zisa figured late September and early October might be that small window to get some renovations done at the BCRO HQ in Hackensack.

Then Mike Saudino melted down in the sheriff’s chair and Zisa subsequently got that letter from Secretary of State Tahesha Way notifying the chairman of the need for a special Nov. 6th Election for sheriff.

So he’s taking tonight’s convention to the VFW Hall in Hasbrouck Heights.

As of right now, he and the BCRO have the following candidates to chose from:

Harry Shortway, Jr. of Midland Park, a Mayor and Undersheriff (pictured);

Jack DeLorenzo of Hasbrouck Heights, a retired captain of detectives and the current mayor of Hasbrouck Heights;

Lewis J. Morrell of Garfield, retired from the Bergen Sheriff’s Office;

and

Matthew Ryan from Mahwah, a K-9 patrol officer with the Bergen Sheriff’s Office.

A few more may step forward.

“It’s been crazy,” Zisa told InsiderNJ. “Never seen anything like it. We had a very small window, but we will have a candidate officially ready to go on Thursday morning and we intend to win.”

Democrats will have their special convention tomorrow.
