All Americans agree that our veterans deserve gratitude for their willingness to risk their lives for our freedom and security. Service knows no party, and should not be used as a political attack at any time. The Somerset County Democrats have honored me to serve as Veterans Caucus Chair. Along with Air Force veteran Commissioner Director Shanel Y. Robinson, our caucus has endorsed Navy veteran Rep. Mikie Sherill for New Jersey governor.

The recent unauthorized disclosure of Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill's military service records is deeply troubling and unacceptable. Her service of nearly 10 years for our country, including her time as a naval pilot and her heroic actions at the United States Naval Academy where she saved the life of a fellow midshipman, are a testament to her dedication, bravery, and selflessness.

Ciattarelli’s attempt to slur her has backfired. But for the leak of these records we would not have known the details of Mikie’s heroism. She was too humble to detail her many commendations and promotions. Jack, while trying to swift boat her, has shed a light on her exemplary service. The only negative takeaway is she was unwilling to “rat” on her colleagues.

While the unwarranted invasion and mischaracterization of Representative Sherrill’s private service records is egregious, it is doubly so when used for partisan politics against one with such an exemplary service record.

The Somerset County Democrat Veterans Caucus  stands firmly in support of Congresswoman Sherrill and her long record of public service as a Naval officer, Assistant US Attorney, and member of the United States Congress. We are confident she will continue that record as the Governor of our great state of New Jersey, continuing her unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the well-being of her constituents.
