Source: Coughlin Trying to Get Sweeney to Murphy

As the NJ Legislature now awaits Governor Phil Murphy’s actions on the 2020 budget, a veteran statehouse source admitted to being confused about front office gamesmanship. The source also predicts the state government will shut down for a day or two.

TRENTON – “Craig is so done with this right now.”

That’s what one insider told InsiderNJ in the aftermath of a round of meetings going down with no deal.

“The only two people who appear to be enjoying this right now are [Governor Phil] Murphy and [Senate President Steve] Sweeney,” the source added.

Coughlin apparently was trying to get Sweeney to snap on some version of a millionaire’s tax.

Two other sources said Coughlin remains absolutely aligned with Sweeney, and played down him trying to nudge the resistant senate prez.

“They know if they get divided now they’ll forever be divided,” a source said.

All season, the Senate President has resisted the proposed tax. Coughlin’s stood with him.

It was fluid.

They planned to meet again today.

  1. What a fraud Sweeney is. Pushed a millionaires’ tax when Christie was in and he knew it couldn’t become law. Now opposes, apparently, any version of the tax when it can become law.
