CWA 1039 Under Internal Review; President Leach Relieved of Duty

Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1039 is the subject of an inquiry by the national union this afternoon following internal reports of missing operations money, a source told InsiderNJ.

The local’s president is Lionel Leach.

A source told InsiderNJ that the local came under scrutiny following an unaccounted for $250,000 in the local’s funds.

A veteran Democratic Party operative from Essex County, Leach over the past five years has grown the ranks of CWA Local 1039.

Subsequent to InsiderNJ breaking this story, CWA Spokesman Joshua Henne issued a statement.

“Recently, Executive Board members of CWA Local 1039 – one of CWA’s 30 local unions in New Jersey - notified the National Union of allegations regarding the mismanagement of that local,” Henne said. CWA takes any allegation made by members very seriously. Based upon information provided, the National Executive Board has voted to place Local 1039 under the supervision of a Temporary Administrator and relieve the president of Local 1039 and the members of the local’s executive board of their responsibilities. A complete investigation of the allegations will be undertaken. The Temporary Administrator will ensure that members are fully represented while the investigation is taking place and until such time as the Union determines Local 1039 can or should supervise itself.  This fair process is regulated by both the CWA Constitution and federal law. And we will follow it to the letter.”
