Sources: Marenco the Favorite for Prieto’s Assembly Seat

If Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32) goes to Sports and Expo, the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) will have an assembly vacancy to fill, a development that will likely engage state Senator Nick Saco (D-32) on behalf of Commissioner Julio Marenco.

There are other names afloat.

Hudson Freeholder Anthony Vainieri gets kicked into the conversation.

“It’s in his blood, plus his sister’s down there,” a North Jersey source told InsiderNJ.

But most sources say Sacco – a proud Italian American astride a Latino district – will likely have to pick a Latino.

Now Bergen has a seat at the table with Fairview. That puts Councilman Jhon Gomez in play.

But Hudson won’t likely give up an assembly seat.

So there’s West Hudson.

Harrison Councilman Jesus Huaranga?

Under consideration – but a longshot.

In Secaucus, Prieto’s home town, there are no Latinos on the local governing body.

That’s out, sources say.

So Sacco will have to look to those inner sanctum allies, among them Joey Muniz, Commissioner Hugo Cabrera, Commissioner Alan Pascual, and Marenco.

Cabrer hungers for mayor, say sources.

Pascual v. Marenco?

Mareno’s Latino.

That gives him the edge, say sources.
