Speaker Coughlin Tests Positive For COVID-19; Self-Quarantines And Will Participate Remotely In Monday’s Session

Coughlin of Middlesex.

The Assembly Majority Office announced on Sunday afternoon that Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin (D-Middlesex) has tested positive for Covid-19, following the results of a test taken to comply with the update to the Assembly Covid-19 health and safety policy.

“I am experiencing very mild cold-like symptoms, but feel fine and am in good spirits,” said Speaker Coughlin. “It is for this exact reason, with the goal of protecting the health and safety of my fellow members, invited guests, and all involved in our proceedings, that the update to our policy was made last week. Out of an abundance of caution I will be self-isolating and participating virtually in Monday’s voting session and Tuesday’s reorganization.”

On Friday, Speaker Coughlin announced that a negative Covid-19 test would be required of all intending to enter the Assembly Chambers for voting on Monday and to attend the Reorganization Ceremony being held at the War Memorial on Tuesday.

“I remain extremely grateful that my symptoms are more than manageable, which is thanks to the science of vaccination and boosters, as well as the extra precaution of wearing a mask,” said the Speaker.

“In these circumstances, I am reminded of the tremendous job our healthcare workers continue to do. For them, yourself, and your family, I strongly urge getting your shot and booster.”
