Statement from BCRO chairman Jack DeLorenzo on Lowering the flag to half staff in Bergen County

At this especially perilous time in America’s history, when the fabric of our nation is being torn apart by irresponsible and provocative rhetoric across social media and our traditional news media – which has led to violence and death, the BCRO requests that Bergen County Executive James Tedesco follow the order of President Trump and lower the American flag at the county administration building at half staff  in commemoration of the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

We believe lowering the flag would be a needed gesture of  peace and tolerance to our community. The flag at half-staff  will give people a moment to reflect on how we interact with those we disagree with politically and socially.  Charlie Kirk set an example for all of us. He didn’t scream at or insult people or denigrate them. He talked  to them  civilly and worked to close the gap between their thoughts and his. It would be great if more of us acted the way Charlie did.

Since Charlie’s murder, we have heard many people say they denounce violence. It’s time to go beyond words and show tangible evidence that we are willing  to settle political differences respectfully.
