Tammy Murphy Takes a Swing at Andy Kim, Whose Allies Retaliate

Trying to channel everyman financial angst as she shoulders a widely criticized U.S. Senate candidacy, Tammy Murphy today said she joins “many New Jerseyans of both parties in calling for a ban on Congressional Stock Trading.”

“Our country is losing its faith in our public servants, in part because they believe that too many

Congressman Kim

Washington politicians are more focused on increasing their personal wealth than ensuring our country’s prosperity,” Tammy Murphy said. “Simply put: Senators and Members of Congress should not be allowed to trade stocks or mutual funds while in office. This is common sense.”

Then she got to the heart of the matter, jumping feet first on the latest development in Kim World.

Andy Kim, Murphy said, “did not call on Congress to ban trading stocks until after former Congressman Tom Malinowski was investigated by the House Ethics Committee. Today, without irony, Congressman Kim proudly accepted an endorsement from former Congressman Tom Malinowski.”

To be clear, Kim doesn’t oppose the ban.

Murphy’s release had the congressman’s allies practically dancing in the endzone as they detected what they described as “fear” in the frontrunner (more on that below).

For the moment, Malinowski, who briefly flirted with a senate candidacy and flag-poled – to no avail – establishment interest in a comeback statewide, prompted Tammy Murphy’s irritation over his endorsement.

From her release:

“In 2022, Tom Malinowski lost his seat in the United States House of Representatives by substantially underperforming fellow Democrats. Despite blaming his redrawn district, the electoral math shows that if Congressman Malinowski had simply performed at the same level as other competitive races in New Jersey, he would have won reelection.

“This underperformance is likely because of serious issues with Malinowski’s financial dealings raised by the House Ethics Committee, which found “substantial” evidence that he failed to disclose stock trades and violated federal conflict of interest rules while in office. Regardless of intent, had Congressman Malinowski followed Ethics rules, he would have avoided an embarrassing inquiry that likely aided his defeat in 2022, which then contributed to Republicans winning a narrow House majority.”

End Citizens United Communications Director Jonas Edwards-Jenks issued the following statement in response to what he described as Murphy’s strange attack:

“In 2022, Tammy Murphy’s PAC supported Malinowski’s campaign even after he faced ethics investigations. Today, without irony, Tammy Murphy lambasted Malinowski. Also without irony, Tammy Murphy—whose investments are held in a so-called ‘blind trust’ that is managed by her brother—didn’t come out against congressional stock trading until Malinowski endorsed Andy Kim.

“It sounds like Tammy Murphy is getting scared—as she should be. Because the fact is, New Jerseyans are sick of corrupt, machine politics and energized to support someone who has been a true champion of reform since day one: Andy Kim.”

  1. Congressman Kim has be the lead sponsor of the bill to prohibit legislators, the judiciary and the executive branch from owning individual stocks. His bill would establish a single standard across government. In his Senate campaign, Andy Kim has spoken at length about this, as part of his effort to restore trust in our leaders. It is ironic that the Governor’s wife is jumping on the bandwagon while acting as if it’s her idea. The way she is behaving in this campaign is disgraceful and is tarnishing the image of both Murphys.

  2. Tammy Murphy has no government experience;
Congressman Kim does. He has been an effective congressman for New Jersey. She should stop her campaign, possibly run in local politics to “get her feet wet.”

  3. Tammy Murphy continues to make ridiculous blunders in this Senate campaign, further proving that she is unqualified for this position. Moreover, she is getting very bad advice from whoever is managing this campaign.

Seriously, is she planning to lash out at EVERY person who chooses to endorse a different candidate. When she can’t buy a candidate, is she going to search for some insult in order to demean them?

    She is an embarrassment.

  4. You can’t fix this. If its it’s CASH, what No one wants to talk about is. FOLLOW THE CASH. Where did it come from? That’s what no one to talk about .

  5. The blatant error (intentional?) That “Kim does opposed the ban” needs to be rescinded immediately, with more than a mild correction. That’s a huge mistake and the correction should be front and center!

  6. Congressman Tom Malinowski was a leader in Congress during his service . The reason he lost was due to resdistricting by the Democratic party to give Congressman Sherrill a clearer path to victory. I was hoping Malinowski would run for the Senate seat! We need more candidates such as him and Andy Kim with experience in foreighn affairs given the current state of the world. Candidates that are not in the pockets of the political elite .

  7. Is Tammy going to call out Democrat Rep. Mikie Sherrill and her husband for stock deals they made.
Sherrill’s husband is banker Jason Hedberg — UBS’s global head of equity derivatives sales — who has worked for the company since 2013. UBS – a Swiss bank, with operations in mainland China. UBS, according to reports, routinely posts CCP economic propaganda on its website.

  8. Matt M – I think you misread that statement. Here it is cut/pasted: “To be clear, Kim doesn’t oppose the ban.”

  9. Tammy Murphy is behaving, and sounding, more and more like one of the spurned on a Bachelor show. As has been said multiple times now since she announced her candidacy, she and her husband expected a sweeping endorsement by all NJ constituents, and they are shocked that they aren’t getting that. The fact remains that Congressman Kim is far and away the right and qualified candidate, and actions such as these reek of desperation.

  10. Laura Beverage – the incorrect statement was corrected by the time you read the piece. It did in fact say “Kim does oppose the ban” for at least 24 hours. A glaring error that illustrates the need for copy editing.
