Senator Michael Testa (R-1) called for the State Legislature to immediately reconvene to pass S-68 after Governor Mikie Sherrill publicly endorsed voter identification requirements for New Jersey elections.
Governor Sherrill revealed her position on voter ID requirements while appearing on News12’s Ask the Governor segment on Wednesday.
The bill, co-sponsored by Senator Testa would require a voter to present photo identification prior to casting a ballot at a polling location. Under the bill, acceptable forms of photo identification would include:
New Jersey driver’s license,
New Jersey REAL ID card,
MVC “identification only” card; or a
United States Passport
“It is beyond time that we implement common-sense safeguards for our elections,” said Senator Testa. “Governor Sherrill publicly stated that she supports voter ID requirements. If that’s the case, there is no reason to wait until the Fall to get this done. The Legislature should immediately reconvene and send this bill to her desk. Republicans are ready to put this to a vote. The Governor has indicated her support. The only question is whether Trenton Democrats are willing to act.”
