Amid ongoing pandemic era protests over the police killing of Minnesotan George Floyd, and in an apparent attempt to minimize the impact of Nero fiddling-while-Rome-burned, besieged President Donald J. Trump won’t be coming to New Jersey after all this weekend to relax at his Somerset County resort.

From NJ.com’s Jonathan Salant, who confirmed the story on Thursday evening:

Trump still plans to go to Maine on Friday but will return to Washington instead of going on to New Jersey, the [White House] official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Demonstrators have protested near the White House every day since George Floyd was killed after a Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee on his neck.

The president has yet to visit his New Jersey golf club this year. It has reopened after temporarily closing due to the coronavirus.

Since becoming president, Trump has spent many warmer weekends at Bedminster, including his traditional August getaway, while flying to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, during the warmer months.

The story landed in a state where protesters have scheduled numerous rallies and marches for the coming weekend in oppositon to police brutality. A source told InsiderNJ that area groups were mobilizing to make an appearance in the vicinity of the gates of Trump’s golf course.
