Van Drew Renews Calls for Windmill Construction Moratorium

Van Drew
Today, U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-2) and Congressman Andrew Harris (R-MD) renewed their calls for the immediate halt of all offshore wind activity until proper investigations are held. It must be discovered if windmill construction is a contributing factor to the fourteen whales that have washed ashore along the east coast since December 1st.

“From the beginning, I have expressed my concerns and opposition with offshore windfarms moving forward without substantial evidence to show how it will affect our environment, our industries, and marine life,” said Van Drew. “And now, attention is finally being drawn to the industrialization of our coastline because of these tragic whale deaths. Not a single concern has been raised by our president or environmentalists after another whale washed ashore this week, amounting to fourteen on the east coast in less than two months. Why has there not been an investigation? Why have Democrats been silent on the issue? We must investigate these deaths and get to the bottom if offshore wind activity is the cause; all offshore wind activity must end immediately until proper examinations and investigations are conducted.”

“Over the weekend, the nation watched as two more whales washed up along the East Coast,” said Congressman Harris. “While NOAA insists that they have no scientific evidence pointing to offshore wind energy projects as the proximate cause of death, they offer no scientific evidence proving that these projects are not contributory causes of death. I am renewing my call for a windmill project moratorium until it can be definitively proven that windmill projects are not contributing to the repeated whale deaths that we are now witnessing on almost a weekly basis.”

  1. I stand with Congressmen Andrew Harris and Rep. Jeff Van Drew in their call for an immediate halt of all offshore wind activity until all proper investigations are held. There must be a moratorium on all windmill projects until there is scientific evidence showing that they are not contributing to the repeated whale deaths.

  2. Thank you Congressmen Van Drew and Harris for saying that part out loud – we cannot say that these projects are NOT the reason why these animals are dying! So, they need stopped – NOW!
    This needs immediate attention!
    Folks, get the word out!

  3. Thank you Rep Van Drew and Congressman Harris. It is appalling that this project is moving forward without proper investigation into its effects on ocean life.

At the STATE OF THE SCIENCE WORKSHOP ON WILDLIFE AND OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY 2020: CUMULATIVE IMPACTS held in NY it was determined that further study was needed to evaluate the impacts of wind energy on sea life.

One group in particular, focusing on marine mammals and co-led by an associate from Orsted, concluded that “…Marine mammals are some of the most studied taxa in the marine environment of the U.S., but key gaps remain in our understanding of their distributions, populations, and other relevant factors. Additionally, little is known about the effects of OSW development on taxa other than harbor porpoises and some seal species…”

So I ask, like millions of others… Where’s the investigation?

  4. I stand with Congressmen Andrew Harris and Rep. Jeff Van Drew in their call for an immediate halt of all offshore wind activity until all proper investigations are held. The mass amount of whale deaths are very concerning. Why are you so determined to turn our ocean into an electric plant and while doing so destroying our precious marine life. It just doesn’t make sense.

  5. This is a Travesty……follow the money…….we live in a dictatorship where far lefty socialists take away our rights. There are so many things wrong w/ these windmills destroying our oceans. Murphy and Biden are nothin but commies.

  6. I support Congressman Van Drew on this. I find it interesting that the Biden Administration wants to shut down the East Coast Lobster industry because it allegedly is killing right whales. What was found out that out of the 8 right whales killed in the lobster grounds, 5 occurred in Canada. But the Biden Administration doesn’t care it’s going to put over 100 families out of business. Biden says it’s to protect the whales.

Yet, when a Danish Company, Orsted, that has the contract to build hundreds of 1000-ft. high wind turbines in the ocean, which we will have a nice view from Point Pleasant, Seaside, or Wildwood beaches, greases the palms of Biden and his fellow Communist-Democrats, it’s o.k. that they kill a few whales for profit.

  7. It is not just a coincidence that these whales have washed up on our beaches…it is an environmental travesty! Halt the ocean “exploration” immediately.

  8. Thanks to “The People’s” representatives Van Drew and Harris. Please put continue to put the heat on to the current administration. Clearly they are ignoring the issue because it interferes with their “Green Agenda” farce! How is Green going to save the earth while it destroys the ocean!? The earth cannot survive without a healthy, protected ocean! Its mindboggling how this administration expects to be reelected as it lies to, ignores and harms its constituents!?

  9. Thank you Congressman for taking bold and aggressive action and remembering why you’re in Washington, to serve the people who overwhelmingly want their coast and property values protected. You’re not there to serve special interests or to use corrupt tactics to block local involvement because you know it wouldn’t pass. The elites who think they know better should be voted out!

  10. Thank you, congressman! Someone needs to fight for the causes of South Jersey and it’s beautiful shoreline. I am so thankful that Congressman Van Drew is doing the right thing by protecting our ocean, its inhabitants, and our fishing communities.

  11. Thank you, congressman! Someone needs to fight for the causes of South Jersey and it’s beautiful shoreline. I am so thankful that Congressman Van Drew is doing the right thing by protecting our ocean, its inhabitants, and our fishing communities. I appreciate you more than you could possibly know.

  12. I am opposed to the massive wind turbine project being planned 9 miles off LBI because there has been no impact studies done on the affected coastal communities, human exposure to constant sounds, blinking lights, precious marine wildlife, and the fishing industries.
The endangered right whale’s migration path goes through the selected location. The wind farm construction and ongoing sounds will impact the endangered whale’s ability to safely migrate. There are only 350 left and 70 reproductive females. In addition, there are thousands of other sea creatures and birds that will be negatively impacted.
The wind farm will industrialize our island, as it will be located only 9 miles away from the coast, in full constant view accompanied by noise. These massive units will be over 1,000 feet tall and lighted at night. This would be the largest in the world. Our pristine ocean view will be ruined. Constant blinking lights at night will interfere with the natural evening sky. Tourism, businesses, home values etc will suffer and the island will be changed forever. Other countries are abandoning wind turbines for a host of reasons. We DON’T WANT THESE WIND TURBINES OFF OUR COAST! They are not the answer to climate change!

  13. I stand with US Rep. Jeff Van Drew to call for a moratorium on any further activity on offshore wind farms. The sea life will be irreparably negatively impacted. Further, noone seems to care about the drop in oceanfront real estate values. How can anyone safely enjoy entering the ocean, especially our little ones without rhe threat of a half dead whale or other sea creature washing up and killing or severly injuring a swimmer?? Tax payers will be forced to pay for the removal of defunct and defective wind mills, after its shown that the costs far outweigh the benefits. President Biden please step in, and stop this now.

  14. Thank you Congressman. Swift action is needed by way of a Federal Investigation into this matter. Unfortunately, the offshore wind turbine survey ships are still off our coast in southern NJ completing testing as of today. I am hopeful that State and Federal leaders will respond to your request.

  15. I stand with congress! And thank you!!!! We do not want or need windmill farms in our ocean. In the past we have seen maybe 2-3 dead whales on shore and now that they’re starting this ocean farm 18 whales have washed up in 2 months!! If that doesn’t scream what’s going on with marine life then idk what is. People need to stop being greedy.

  16. Thank you for supporting we the people in our fight to protect NJ most valuable natural resources. The whales won’t be the only marine life affected by this massive invasion.

  17. Thank you so much for this caring action. I stand beside Rep. Jeff Van Drew and Congressman Andrew Harris to have this project come to a halt. I am not in favor of this project at all no matter how far out. It is negatively affecting marine life. It is inconsiderate and a selfish act putting others unnecessary needs in front of what belongs to this earth and our waters. These whale deaths are no coincidence.

  18. We need to find out what is killing the whales before any work continues on the offshore Wind Farms. Please, please, please take this seriously. Stop development until we have answers. If you believe the whale and dolphin deaths aren’t due to the wind farm development, why would you not stop until that has been established?

  19. Thank you Congressman Van Drew! The turbines only harm the ocean and all Marine Life. We need the Offshore Wind Project stopped completely and the surveying ships out of the NJ coast immediately. We firmly stand with you against this terrible project. Also, looking forward in the coming days, for a thorough Federal investigation. Again, thank you for all your help, it is greatly needed for our beautiful ocean.
    .

  20. I have lived at the Jersey Shore for 53 years. I say no to Turbines off our South New Jersey Coast! They are unhealthy for the Ocean and unhealthy for humans! It is an experiment only, with zero benefit. . They will not lower our electrical bill. The low frequency sound that comes from the turbines is toxic to humans. They are not wind turbines, they are turbines driven by fossil fuels, it is all a sea of lies! They are a eye sore. Stop this waste of our tax dollars!

  21. Thank you to U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-2) and Congressman Andrew Harris (R-MD) for your renewed calls for the immediate halt of all offshore wind activity until proper investigations are held! You have listened to your constituents and you are representing them! Others, please join in the support! Let’s all continue to enjoy the beach for what it is, one of the most beautiful wonders that we love, not sitting and watching wind turbine blades spinning continuously, as our environment is negatively affected!

  22. Thankyou for being the only responsible people doing something to speak up against this horrific project. It’s not only Marine life that these machines effect. They are now discovering the all the long term health problems that Humans are experiencing due to the Infrasound & Low Frenquency Noise caused by these Turbines. Please continue your efforts to stopping this destructive project. Keep our Ocean Clean of Machines!!!

  23. Thank you Congressman! I have immense appreciation for the aggressive action you are taking to protect our ocean! There is great hope that your call for an immediate halt on all offshore wind activity to allow for further testing will be heard by our state and federal leaders.

  24. Thank you Congressman! I have immense appreciation for the actions you are taking to protect our ocean! There is great hope that your call to halt all offshore wind activity to allow for further testing will be heard by our state and federal leaders.

  25. Jeff VanDrew told me he is against the industrialization of our Jersey shore. He know we are all being scammed in the name of “green” energy. These offshore projects that involve leasing parts of the ocean to foreign countries need to be investigated. And the deaths of the whales demand higher level necropsies, that will be shared with the public, and which are conducted by places that have not accepted donations from the offshore wind companies. NOAA needs to uphold the very Acts that were established to protect sea life, including whales. Governor Murphy needs to wake up and pull back on his so called visions that will ultimately destroy an ecosystem and inflict heavy costs on rate payers. Turbines are horribly expensive with no return on investment. We need to question this Administration’s reckless regard for our ocean and the speed at which permits were granted for takes and harassments. Shore town Mayors have spoken out, and I hope many others will demand a stop to offshore wind.

  26. Thank you Congressmen for standing up for the ocean and your constituents who love it. We need to stop the turbine projects before it is too late and we need your help! The damage being done now and what will result in the future if we allow these turbines to be installed will be irreparable and detrimental for future generations. The promise of “green energy” through wind turbines is only smoke and mirrors to garner support from people with good intentions. The reality of the environmental damage from destruction of the ocean floor, habitat for the animals in the sea and birds in the air far outweighs any possible benefit to wind energy at this time. Maybe someday the technology will exist to make wind energy safe and effective, but that is not what we will get if we allow this project to move forward. Please stand strong!

  27. Thank you, Congressman Van Drew. We need to protect the sea life that cannot protect themselves. Their ecosystem will be destroyed if we don’t slow down and investigate the potential impact of the offshore wind farm. There is clearly a connection between the recent whale deaths and the surveying for offshore wind. We need to act responsibly not recklessly. Thank you for taking a stand on this matter.

  28. Thank you Congressman Van Drew for taking this issue seriously. I believe I can speak on behalf of all the concerned residents of New Jersey, we appreciate you.

  29. The outright absurdity and criminality of this behind closed doors decision to kill our sea life, ruin our view from our pristine Brigantine beaches, change birds migratory patterns and kill them as they try to pass through, lower our property values, increase disturbing noise levels from these monstrosities in the sea. Please help stop this as we were also told by our Mayor that Brigantine bears the brunt of the negativity but our town does not benefit at all and it will raise the cost of electric to all residents. We are all sickened by these frauds Murphy and Biden as they line their pockets at the cost of the lives of our beautiful defenseless sea creatures and the well being of our wonderful town.

  30. Thank you Congressman! You can be our strongest voice in fighting this attack on our beautiful ocean and all of it inhabitants. The corruption with offshore wind is so disturbingly blatant. NOAA is bought and paid for. Environmental groups bought and paid for. And Lord knows what our Governor is getting out of this. It’s shameful. Keep fighting sir. We need you to keep fighting and we are behind you. Thank you.

  32. Thank you! Say it loud. Say it clear. Wind farms are a profit center for corrupt politicians and greedy hedge funds/investors.

God gave us this planet – we have already done enough to it. Leave our oceans alone!

  33. So much misinformation in the comments. Of the necropsies that could be done all have determined that gashes and injuries to the dead whales have more than likely been from vessels ramming the whales. There has been no evidence at all that wind farms, sonar etc has caused whale deaths. In fact in 2017 there were more whale deaths than last year. How many wind farm projects did we have then?

  34. Amazing what a bunch of garbage comments on this article. Were they all written by the same lobbyist for the oil companies? If people actually cared about marine life, they would advocate for major changes in ocean shipping, an end to factory fishing, and deep reductions in the use of fossil fuels. But yeah, go ahead and blame wind turbines.

  35. The whales are 60 percent gay and even though God hates them we should all be glad that we can give them a choice by posting fake comments here.
Us Republicans didn’t care about the environment until we could use it as an excuse to keep big oil afloat by ruining wind farms. Long live stupid!

  36. Making up fake diagnoses of whale deaths as an excuse to further destroy their habitat with dirty energy is about as cynical as it gets.
