Bennett and Attack Ads

WASHINGTON BOROUGH - The conversation at Veterans Park here Saturday evening was about the mailers in CD-7.

"Yeah, they're making those mailers hot and heavy, two and three a day."

So observed Charles Boddy, the chair of the Warren County Democratic Committee. Boddy and Robert Stead, a Democratic state committeeman from Warren, were chatting just after a canvas launch to benefit Rebecca Bennett.

When it comes to mailers, Bennett is the leading lady.

She is being relentlessly attacked on two fronts - by a presumed Republican PAC called Real Change and by Tina Shah, one of her Democratic opponents in next Tuesday's primary. The other candidates are Michael Roth and Brian Varela.

In recent days, a Real Change mailer alleges Bennett is "standing with ICE." It says don't vote for her, but does not endorse any of the other candidates.

A mailer from Shah says Bennett cannot be trusted because she was originally a Republican.

"Ridiculous," said Boddy.

Then again, nasty ads that are repeated again and again can make a difference.

Bennett has put up information on her social media page rebuffing the accusations.

She said Saturday that she is taking the attacks seriously, which is why she has answered them.

"I do think people are going to see through the lies and the misleading stuff people are putting out," she said.

There have not been a lot of polls in this race. The few out there, however, put Bennett in the lead, which explains why she is being attacked.

Stead said because Bennett is presumed to be comfortably in the lead, he does not think the attack ads will make any difference.

No mail on Sunday, of course, but let's see what Monday brings.
