The Dunec Concerto: Music to Webber’s Ears

A week or so ago, Democratic congressional candidate Mikie Sherrill was delighted to announce that she had been endorsed by Mike Puzio, a Republican councilman in Rockaway Township.

Jay Webber is trying to do better than that.

The Republican candidate in District 11 announced Monday that he’s been endorsed by Mark Dunec, the district’s Democratic candidate for Congress in 2014.

Dunec, who lacked the finances for a serious campaign, received about 65,000 votes for Congress in 2014. He was easily beaten by Rep. Rodney P. Frelinghuysen, who got almost 110,000 votes.

Dunec, who lives in Livingston, said he’s concerned that “mainstream Democratic elected officials and candidates have embraced a socialist ideology.” He also said that the national Republican party is the only one that has demonstrated “through actions its unwavering support for the State of Israel.”

All this has got to be music to Webber’s ears. We are still in August, but Webber’s apparent goal is to portray Sherrill as a radical leftist.

A statement from Webber claimed that “many common sense, moderate Democrats are joining our movement for more jobs, lower taxes and greater opportunity for all Americans.”

How many more Democrats join Webber’s campaign remains to be seen.

So, we have a sitting Republican councilman endorsing Sherrill.

And a losing Democratic congressional candidate endorsing Webber.

Which endorsement means more? Or does either mean anything at all?

One presumes that depends on your point of view.

One response to “The Dunec Concerto: Music to Webber’s Ears”

  1. I can’t express how shocked and disappointed I am in Mark Dunec, who’s campaign I ran digital communications for in 2014. I’ve been emailing back and forth with him all morning after I saw the tweet linked below with him and Jay Webber together. He told me that he was not campaigning for Webber but that he did support him (and Menendez, go figure). Now it’s clear that he’s just as much a liar as Jay Webber. I really misjudged Mark Dunec. https://twitter.com/michaelceller/status/1028842928679075840?s=21
