Election Day Turnout Underwhelming so Far in Somerset After 'Huge' Early Voting Surge

Somerset Clerk Steve Peter.

BRIDGEWATER - Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter described early voting this year in his county as "huge."

Election Day voting?

Not so much.

Election Day turnout is not what he would characterize as concussive.

"Early voting was huge this year and the VBMs were solid," Peter told InsiderNJ. "Some people opted out of VBMs because of the uncertainty factor.

"Election Day is a little bit lackluster," he added. "I'm surprised."

What does he make of it?

"A lot of folks are tired of the circus," he said. "You can only go on for so long."

Dems still to this point - on the strength of early voting - are outpacing Republicans in Somerset 43,505 to 23,600.

InsiderNJ plans to check in later today with the clerk in the battleground county, home to CD-7 Democratic challenger Rebecca Bennett.
