NEWARK - On the heels of Governor Mikie Sherrill rattling off accomplishments in the first six months of her statewide service, a reporter asked her if there is anything she hasn't accomplished.

Sherrill laughed.

A lot, she acknowledged.

But, she argued in Military Park this morning at a renter protection bill signing, her administration has laid the groundwork for more, and - critically - prioritized doing the job with integrity to secure and honor the public trust.

Getting ahead of a decrepit - and widely panned - address to the nation by President Donald J. Trump last week in which he tried to scare voters, Sherrill was the first governor in the nation to sign a bill protecting voters.

In addition, over the course of six months in office, Sherrill - she noted, has made 21 executive orders, hosted eight World Cup games, met head on two record snowstorms and a history-making heat dome.

"But through it all we've charted a new course," said the New Jersey Governor, a day after the World Cup finale. "Competence over chaos. Integrity over self-dealing. And opportunity over exclusion. And we're just getting started."

Today, Sherrill signed the FAIR Act, to take on rent setting tools that undermine competition and drive up housing costs for renters.

"It builds on the work I've done over the last six months to lower housing costs," Sherrill said.

Specifically, "Forbidding the Algorithmic Inflation of Rent (FAIR) Act" aims "to prevent landlords from using software that recommends rental prices based on competitors’ private data," according to The Jersey Vindicator.

"These tools put landlords on the same team against renters. It's collusion by algorithm - and it's illegal," said the Governor, noting the capacity for one algorithmic tool to drive double digit rent increases.

Renters, she noted, citing a national analysis, paid $3.8 billion more in 2023 because of that same algorithm.

"Rents are already out of control - up 25% since the pandemic and 30% statewide," the

Governor said. "The last thing our market needs is a tool designed to push renters to the brink."

The Fair Act prevents coordinated manipulation, Sherrill said.

Elected officials and leaders at the bill signing ceremony included Executive Assistant Attorney General Sundeep Iyer, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez, Assemblywoman Katie Brennan, Assemblyman Chigozie Onyema, and Ana Maria Hill of 32BJ SEIU.
