Hill: Mejia Movement Real in CD-11

An early and avid backer of Analilia Mejia for Congress in CD-11, Ana Maria Hill, New Jersey State Director of SEIU, said the Mejia Campaign feels like a "different movement."

"It is driven by the people and for the people," Hill told InsiderNJ on Election Day. "It's all grassroots and it is made up of everybody who has it all to lose, including immigrant communities, people working three jobs and volunteering their Saturdays on the campaign. These are people for whom everything is on the line. They have hope with this campaign, and with this candidate. The blistering cold hasn't stopped people from coming out with conviction."

What concerns voters the most?

"The folks I'm talking to are concerned about what is going on with our country," said Hill. "They see what's happening in Minnesota and they ask, 'Are we ready when it comes to New Jersey?"

People also can't afford life here in New Jersey, Hill said.

"Paychecks are not stretching as much as they used to, and rents are skyrocketing," she said.

Hill spoke to InsiderNJ as she campaigned down the stretch of Election Day for Mejia.

She said she sees a lot of SEIU colors out there, CWA and Workers United.

"It's a rainbow of colors for Analilia," Hill said. "It absolutely feels like a movement. Everything happening in Minnesota is affecting people. It is affecting the youth of our community, who see their friends, their classmates, taken out of classes. They are no longer seeing their classmates."

Hill said she believes Mejia would be an excellent and engaged congresswoman.

Herself a veteran of SEIU 32BJ as the organization's political director, Mejia "Knows what our struggle is," said Hill. "We would see a very different energy down in Washington with her, the kind of energy we need because the world is on fire and we need to put it out."
