Late Volatility in the Democratic Primary, or Cruise Control? Voters will Decide Tuesday

EAST WINDSOR - Steve Fulop says he's gaining ground - happy to talk about a favorable media report that suggested the race was neck and neck between him and Mikie Sherrill.

Could be, but Sherrill is not taking the bait.

"Good, good for him," Sherrill said as she arrived Wednesday evening for a rally at a local Elks Lodge sponsored by Mercer County Democrats.

Talking to about 75 or so people, the CD-11 congresswoman ignored her primary competitors and talked instead about Jack Ciattarelli.

Just a few nights ago, Ciattarelli, appearing on a phone hook-up with Donald Trump, had vowed, if elected, not to challenge any of the president's executive orders, which is precisely what Democratic states - like New Jersey - are doing.

Ciattarelli was paying homage to Trump, who has endorsed him in the Republican primary.

Sherrill condemned his stance, saying that a governor should never pledge to relinquish the power states have to fight executive orders harmful to their interests.

She said one of the reasons she is running for governor is to combat the Trump Administration on New Jersey's behalf.

Sherrill offered some history.

"This is not the first time New Jersey has been called upon to save the free world," he said.

She spoke of Thomas Paine famously writing, "These are the times that try men's souls."

And then, or at least eventually, Washington crossed the Delaware and the rest, as they say, is history.

That crossing, of course, happened in Mercer County. All candidates like to present a local touch.

More relevantly, Mercer County has been good to Sherrill.  The county committee endorsed her a few months ago.

Such endorsements are not as meaningful as they once were without a county line, but an endorsement, one supposes, is still an endorsement.

A number of local bigwigs, including Dan Benson, the county executive, and Janice Mironov, the county Democratic chair, were on hand for tonight's event.

After Sherrill's remarks, Mironov implored the crowd to stick around and meet "the next governor."
