Leaders Continue to Hammer Away at 2027 Budget Negotiations

TRENTON - The principals talked over the weekend but did not reach consensus on key details of the $60.7 Billion Fiscal Year 2027 Budget, sources this morning told InsiderNJ.
It could change at any time. Governor Mikie Sherrill, Senate President Nick Scutari, and Speaker Craig Coughlin are resolved to get the budget done by Sept. 30th.
In the words of one source, "We are in stay mode because of Stay."
The reference is to the StayNJ program.
From the state Division of Taxation:
The Stay NJ program offers property tax benefits to eligible homeowners aged 65 and older. It reimburses applicants for 50% of their property tax bills, up to a maximum of $13,000, with a 2025 benefit cap of $6,500. To qualify, you must have owned and lived in a home for the full 12 months of 2025 and have an income below $500,000.
Governor Sherrill wants to modify the income qualifications for the program to $250K, but Speaker Coughlin disagrees.
"No deal today," a source said. Some progress.
But they continue to expect to get the budget done by June 30th, the state's constitutional deadline.
Last week, at the end of the Senate session, "I anticipate the budget committee meeting Wednesday and Friday of next week and final summer votes will be Monday the 29th and or Tuesday the 30th," said the Senate President.
"Right now, it's scheduled for the 30th."
Then he added, "It could be later - who knows."
