McIver on Death of Third Person Detained at Delaney Hall
Today, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) responded to reporting that a third person had died after being detained at Delaney Hall, the controversial facility in her New Jersey district, and then released.
“News of Jose Chajon-Raxon’s death is heartbreaking and tragic, and my thoughts are with his loved ones. He is the third person to die after being detained at Delaney Hall—the pattern of abuse is plain as day,” said McIver. “The fact that ICE is creating a loophole to avoid having to investigate or take accountability for this loss is disgusting. It is also what we have come to expect from ICE and this administration: they will bend and break the rules no matter who dies, how many families are destroyed, and how much suffering is caused along the way. This is why I will keep fighting for real oversight—because we can’t trust that the administration is going to be honest about what is happening behind closed doors, they will just keep lying.
“Shut down Delaney. Abolish ICE. We need justice now.”
Chajon-Raxon is the third person to have died after being detained at Delaney Hall. The facility sits within McIver’s district, and her pursuit of legal protected oversight of the facility’s operating conditions is at the center of the Trump administration’s case against the congresswoman. McIver faces 17 years in prison after ICE escalated a routine oversight visit in May, 2025, leading to baseless federal charges from the Trump DOJ. The case is ongoing.
WASHINGTON, Aug 12 — An immigrant from Guatemala who was taken to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, in July experienced a medical emergency and died after hospitalization, President Donald Trump’s administration said.
Jose Chajon-Raxon was detained by ICE at the Delaney Hall detention facility on July 18 and experienced a medical emergency the next day, the Department of Homeland Security, of which ICE is a part, said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.
A nurse responded to the medical emergency and “witnessed Chajon-Raxon experiencing seizure-like activity,” the DHS said, adding medical workers were called and Chajon-Raxon was taken to a hospital.
The DHS said Chajon-Raxon was “released from ICE custody on July 22” but did not provide more details on that. The DHS statement did not mention when Chajon-Raxon died.
