McIver Responds to Censure and Committee Removal Threat

Tonight, Rep. Clay Higgins moved to force a vote to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-10) and remove her from the House Committee on Homeland Security because of an oversight visit the Congresswoman conducted in May. In response, McIver released the following statement:

“We were all elected to do the people’s work. I take that responsibility seriously—Clay Higgins clearly does not. Instead of making life any better for the people he represents, he’s seeking to punish me for doing what he and his caucus are too cowardly to do: conduct real oversight, stand up to this administration, and do our jobs. If House Republicans think they can make me run scared, they’re wrong.”

By way of context, from Axios:

The House is set to vote this week on a Republican measure to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) and remove one of her committee assignments.

Why it matters: With a Republican majority in the House, the resolution could pass — adding to McIver's woes as she faces prosecution by the Trump administration on charges of assaulting an ICE officer.

  • Democrats have accused the Justice Department of charging McIver for political reasons after she and two colleagues scuffled with officers outside the Delany Hall detention facility in Newark.
  • McIver has said she was the one who was assaulted by law enforcement as they moved to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka for trespassing.

Driving the news: Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) on Tuesday formally introduced a privileged resolution to censuring McIver, which forces a House vote within two days.

  • The resolution would also remove McIver from the Homeland Security Committee, which oversees ICE.
  • "McIver's continued service on the Committee on Homeland Security, which is charged with oversight of Federal immigration enforcement and other national security matters, would represent a significant conflict of interest," the resolution says.
