Mikie Sherrill Wins (LIVE STREAM)

Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Jack Ciattarelli tonight to become the next Governor of New Jersey.
The AP Called it HERE.
Republican Ciattarelli put up a gallant stand but could not cope with blue state backlash against President Donald Trump in the White House.
The election wasn't close (see below). It was unofficially a 13-point blowout.
The GOP got smoked in places like Hillsborough, Bridgewater (now in Democratic control), Montgomery, Manville, and Bernards (in Democratic control).
Assembly incumbent Republicans (three, and maybe as many as five) fell in the anti-Trump tsunami.
Sherrill defeated Ciattarelli in his home county of Somerset - also home to Trump's golf course - by about 10K votes.
Trump backed Ciattarelli in the GOP Primary, cementing the statewide prospect to his side. Ciattarelli could not find any disagreement with Trump on, a difficult position as the President's poll numbers nosedived.
A former Navy helicopter pilot from Montclair, Sherrill said on day one she would issue a state of emergency on utility costs to freeze rate hikes for one year. She also vowed to fight back against Trump policies that hurt New Jersey, including the President's declaration of a termination of the Gateway Tunnel Project.
Sherrill ran as a moderate.
Republican efforts to brand her as a Zohran Mamdani Dem fizzled as Sherrill stayed in the center through the course of the general election and played it safe with the media.
She routinely emphasized her biography, including time served as a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office and her military service, to strike a chord of trust with voters skeptical about establishment Democrats.

The Ciattarelli Campaign's attempt to tarnish Sherrill's military record appeared to ignite the Democrat,
who effectively counterpunched the Republican's claims in the second debate of the campaign season. Stunned by his opponent's assault on his own professional record, Ciattarelli vowed to sue.
But Sherrill, at her worst seen as a remote candidate, especially by progressives, many of whom backed second-place finisher Newark Mayor Ras Baraka in the Democratic Primary, impressed people with her display of fighting spirit. Many New Jersey voters needed to see that, and her willingness to mix it up deepened the candidate's attempt to connect.
It looked ridiculous, golf course-softened men trying to hit the sharp veteran - a woman, with nearly a decade of distinguished military service behind her - on a technicality. Coupled with Trump's failing numbers on the economy and issues pertaining to American freedom, not to mention the real-world consequences of the government shutdown, including cuts to SNAP, handcuffed Ciattarelli in the end.
Look at these monster numbers for Sherrill out of her home county of Essex, where four years ago Phil Murphy received 132,520 votes:

Sherrill could say, in the words of Bonnie Watson Coleman, "My hometown showed up."
In the Governor-elect's case, her home county poured on a bravura voter turnout performance, from, yes, her hometown of Montclair, to Newark - higher than expected heading into Election Day - to everywhere in between (except Millburn, which reddened).
In September, Colleen O’Dea of NJ Spotlight News, asked a panel in Atlantic City if Trump would be the deciding factor in the governor’s race and someone in response said, no, it would be affordability.
Everyone tried to make the issue affordability: Ciattarelli, Sherrill (especially early) - and even the media.
But Trump insisted on making the contest about himself.
Other tidbits regarding Sherrill's victory tonight:
- Erased Trump’s gains in 2024 with Black, Hispanic, and AAPI voters.
- Won Black voters by an 86-point margin, Latino voters by a 32-point margin, and Asian voters by a 64-point margin.
- Dominated among young voters, winning 18-29-year-olds by 2 to 1.
- Increased an already sizable margin among women further to nearly 60% vote share.
