Reynolds-Jackson on Trump's Mail-in Voting EO: 'Not in NJ'

TRENTON - Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (D-15) continues to fight the Trump Agenda from the New Jersey Statehouse as she jockeys for position in a big field of CD-12 Democratic Primary contenders.
Last week, the Trenton lawmaker's colleague, Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-20), gave her colleague a shout-out for her work on anti-mask legislation, but this week, President Donald J. Trump poses a new unconstitutional threat to democracy.
Trump has signed an executive order attempting to create lists of US citizens who are eligible to vote in each state, though experts say he lacks the authority to do so.
Tuesday's order directs the US Postal Service (USPS) to send ballots only to voters on the lists, created by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.
The Democratic party filed a lawsuit a day later asking a US judge to block Trump's move.
The US Constitution gives states oversight of federal elections, while Congress has the ability to make changes.
In an interview with InsiderNJ, the Assemblywoman (pictured, top, with Trenton Councilwoman At-Large Yazminelly Gonzalez) said, "I'm fighting that we get the John R. Lewis Act passed..." to codify NJ election law.
"This nonsense about mail-in voting [from Trump] - in New Jersey, mail-in voting is safe, easy, and secure and we want to continue to protect it," said the Assemblywoman.
Trump, she noted, wants to suppress voting.
"A lot of people are participating [in VBM voting] and we want to continue to allow them to do so," said Reynolds-Jackson, who also expressed strong opposition to the President's efforts to nationalization... voting."
"No - not in New Jersey," added the prime sponsor in the Statehouse of the John R. Lewis Act.
The assemblywoman was in her hometown downtown this morning with Governor Mikie Sherrill to celebrate the coming of a new coffee and donut shop.

Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson released a statement earlier this month about A1715, known as the “John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey” after its advancement in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
“The most fundamental right in a democracy is the right to vote. It is the cornerstone of our civic process, and since the founding of our nation, we have worked to uphold and expand that right for every eligible citizen.
“Yet today, after generations of hard-won progress, the Trump Administration is looking to strip that right from countless Americans. We need to stand up and protect the voting rights of all American citizens, especially marginalized communities and people of color, against this effort to silence the voices of thousands of Americans.
“The late Congressman John Lewis said it best, ‘Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we call the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself.’ This bill honors the legacy of a man who spent his life fighting for equal rights and lived to see the fruits of his sacrifices; from the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. We cannot allow what he and so many other fought—the rights of women, people of color, young voters, and countless other disenfranchised groups—to be erased."
