Pallone Derides Trump's 'Catastrophic' Budget Bill

Pallone

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6) reflected this evening on President Donald J. Trump's Budget Bill.

Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” would extend his 2017 tax cuts for millionaires and corporations at a cost to critical social programs such as Medicaid. On Saturday, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the Senate legislation would increase the deficit by more than $3.9 trillion over the next 10 years (From The New Republic).

Pallone's full emailed statement to InsiderNJ:

“When House Republicans passed Trump’s devastating tax bill without a single Democratic vote, we knew it would be catastrophic for New Jersey. Trump’s Big, Ugly bill slashes at least $3.6 billion from our state’s Medicaid program every year – jeopardizing care for over 800,000 residents. Nearly half of those who gained coverage through our Medicaid expansion could lose it because of new red tape. And nearly half a million New Jerseyans relying on the Affordable Care Act could see their premiums rise by more than $4,000 annually. On top of that, Republicans are penalizing states like ours that cover all children, costing us another $700 million.

Right now, Senate Republicans are rewriting the bill in real time during their vote-a-rama. We have no reason to believe they’re fixing these problems. If anything, they’re making them worse and the cuts deeper.

Democrats are going to keep fighting back – in hearings, town halls, and on the floor. But Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House. They own this. Three New Jersey Republicans in Congress could stop it, but only if their constituents demand action now.

Senator Tillis said the quiet part out loud. His home state of North Carolina took over a decade to expand Medicaid, and now all that progress could be wiped out. Electric bills will rise. Health care costs for middle-class families will skyrocket and millions more will lose coverage. Tillis only found the courage to speak up because he’s retiring. It shouldn’t take a retirement to do the right thing. Sadly, I don’t see any of his Republican colleagues showing the same willingness to go against Donald Trump.

Most Americans still don’t know what’s in this bill, and that’s no accident. Republicans are rushing this bill through before people have a chance to process it. But people will absolutely feel the pain. When their health care is denied, when their electric bills spike, and when their monthly premiums rise. That’s why I hope New Jerseyans call their Republican members of Congress and demand they stop this before it’s too late.”
