115,000 New Jersey Residents Would Directly Benefit from the Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 6)
All But Four Members of the NJ Congressional Delegation have Signed on to HR6 as Co-Sponsors
New Jersey – On Saturday, more than forty New Jersey based faith, community, labor and advocacy organizations sent a letter to the four members of the New Jersey congressional delegation that have not yet signed on to support the Dream and Promise Act, new legislation introduced last week that would provide permanent protections for undocumented immigrant youth and those under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED). Congresswoman Sherrill (NJ-11), Congressman Gottheimer (NJ-5), Congressman Smith (NJ-4) and Congressman Van Drew (NJ-2) are the only four members of the New Jersey delegation that have yet to sign on to HR6.
Dreamers and TPS holders — as well as their families and communities — have had their lives thrown into limbo due to the cruel actions of the Trump administration. The Dream and Promise Act recognizes the urgent need to provide permanent protections without using immigrants as bargaining chips to win a host of anti-immigrant provisions. Nearly 2.5 million people nationwide could benefit directly from passage of the Dream and Promise Act.
In New Jersey, approximately 115,000 individuals would benefit directly from the Dream & Promise Act, including 13,900 TPS holders and 101,000 Dreamers who came to this country as children, according to New Jersey Policy Perspective.
Make the Road New Jersey has announced a week of action during this week’s congressional recess to urge support for the Dream and Promise Act.
