Bills Inspired by Local Member Aim to Promote Patriotism & Raise Funds for Vets

Two pieces of legislation sponsored by Senate Republicans Anthony Bucco and Kristin Corrado that would authorize the creation of two separate special American Legion Auxiliary license plates have been approved by the Senate Transportation Committee.

The bills would authorize the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) to issue “American Legion Auxiliary” and “Sons of the American Legion” license plates.

“American Legion members honorably answer the call of ‘Service Not Self.’ These proud men and women have been instrumental in our efforts to advocate for policies that protect and uplift our nation’s heroes,” Sen. Anthony Bucco said. “These license plate designations are a great way to honor the Legion’s strong traditions, and support their efforts to serve, educate, and give back to local veterans.”

Senator Bucco noted that idea for the legislation was inspired by James Smith, a member of the Sons of Legion and Wharton resident.

“My father was a WWII veteran in the Air Force, and two of my uncles served in the Army during Vietnam. Many of our brave soldiers fought and died for their country, and it is our responsibility to carry on memories of these soldiers – past and present,” James Smith, the member who inspired the legislation, said. “I’ve belonged to the American Legion for 38 years. As a Son, I am privileged to serve our veterans. I am proud to see legislation advance to honor our heroes, by creating two new American Legion license plates.”

The New Jersey American Legion Auxiliary advocates for veterans and seniors statewide. Their efforts include raising awareness of scams that target veterans, and advocating for improved access to veteran health care.

Both pieces of legislation, S-3139 and S-3140, would require that additional fees collected by the license plates are to be deposited into the “American Legion Auxiliary License Plate Fund.” The proceeds of the fund would then be appropriated annually to the ALANJ.

“New Jersey American Legion members are some of the most hardworking and selfless people you will ever meet,” Sen. Kristin Corrado said. “I am so grateful for all they have done to help our veterans. This legislation will provide much-needed aid to the American Legion, and promote patriotism here, and anywhere our new license plates are seen.”
