Legislation sponsored by Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-26) to establish the “New Jersey Pediatric Cancer Research Fund” and allow taxpayers to make voluntary contributions to the fund on their state income tax returns was passed by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.

“It’s heartbreaking when a child is diagnosed with cancer,” Pennacchio stated. “Additionally, it’s upsetting to see that only four percent of federal cancer research funds are dedicated to pediatric cancer. I have faith that when given the option to donate to childhood cancer research, New Jersey families will open their hearts and donate to children in need. I want to thank Chairman Vitale for allowing this important effort to be considered at today’s Health Committee meeting.”

S-1538 would allow New Jersey taxpayers to donate a portion of their State income tax refund to the “New Jersey Pediatric Cancer Research Fund.” The fund would support pediatric cancer research projects that are approved by the New Jersey State Commission on Cancer Research.

Pennacchio noted that the legislation honors Aaron Newton, a young boy in West Milford, who recovered from cancer and whose parents, Kerrie and Scott, are childhood cancer awareness advocates.

“Every bit counts when finding a cure to pediatric cancer,” Pennacchio added. “No matter how big or small their donation may be, our taxpayers will have the opportunity to fund research which may give New Jersey’s children and families the hope they need. This new fund will help the smallest superheroes who have the biggest battles.”

The legislation now heads to the full Senate for a vote.
