AFP-NJ Responds to Murphy’s Final Budget Agreement Following Vote

Trenton, N.J. – Americans for Prosperity – New Jersey (AFP-NJ) responded to the release of the legislature’s new budget today. The grassroots group hopes to raise awareness of the implications this will have on New Jerseyans.

AFP-NJ State Director Tony Howley issued the following statement:

“The state government continues to borrow billions of dollars without making any budget cuts. The legislature claimed that they needed these funds to help cover the losses incurred because of the pandemic that increased spending for the year. No one experiencing financial hardship would, in their right mind, borrow more and increase spending to resolve their issues. We urge Governor Murphy to put an end to this irresponsible decision making and adopt smarter spending reforms to allow for the Garden State to recover stronger.”

Background

On September 21, 2020, the legislature introduced multiple legislation that would have New Jersey borrow $4 billion, call for tax increases and provide small tax rebates to families with children while increasing the tax rate for annual income over $1 million. New Jersey would increase spending to over $40 billion and not fully fund public employees’ pensions should these be enacted. The budget must be finalized by October 1, 2020.
