UPDATE: AG’s Office Releases Identities of the Decedent and Atlantic City Police Officer in Police-Involved Shooting on June 2, 2026

TRENTON — The Attorney General’s Office today identified the decedent and one of the officers in connection with a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The civilian who died during the encounter has been identified as Donald Gardner (also known as Donald Capriotti), 52, of Atlantic City. The officer who fired shots has been identified as Officer Robert Reynolds of the Atlantic City Police Department.

According to the preliminary investigation, the encounter occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m. at a residence in the 100 block of North Florida Avenue in Atlantic City. Two officers were struck by gunfire, and Mr. Gardner was fatally shot by Officer Reynolds, who was not injured. The officers were transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing, and no further information is being released at this time.

A 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
