Alison Accettola Named General Counsel for Senate Majority
Will Succeed Fruqan Mouzon
Trenton – Alison Accettola was named General Counsel for the Senate Democratic Majority, Senate President Steve Sweeney announced today, where she will serve as the top staff attorney for the Senate President, the Senate Democratic Leadership and the Senate Majority Caucus.
“Alison is a smart, highly-skilled attorney who possesses a strong, working knowledge of the legislative process and an innate understanding of the impact the work of the Senate has on the lives of the people we serve,” said Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland). “She knows what we do as lawmakers, how to get it done and why we do it. Alison has gained the trust and the respect of everyone she has worked with and I have full confidence in her ability to serve as General Counsel.”
Ms. Accettola will succeed Fruqan Mouzon, who has served as General Counsel for more than four years.
“Fruqan excelled as General Counsel,” said Senator Sweeney. “He provided valuable advice, insight and guidance on the challenging legal and policy issues that we confronted in recent years. The performance of the New Jersey Senate was more accomplished because of his contributions. Fruqan will be missed as a professional colleague and as a friend to the senators and the staff.”
Ms. Accettola has served as Associate Counsel since 2015 and as the top policy aide for the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee and the Senate Commerce Committee. She previously performed the same functions for the Senate Environment and Economic Growth Committees. Accettola is also the Senate’s attorney for the Legislative Select Oversight Commitee, which conducted an investigation of the hiring practices of the administration.
Prior to joining the Senate Majority staff, Accettola was an Assistant Public Defender in Middlesex county for eight years and a consulting attorney for the Office of Reeentry in Newark. A graduate of Drew University and American University’s Washington College of Law, Accetola is a resident of Flemington, N.J.
