American Federation of Teachers New Jersey Endorses Sweeney
FOR RELEASE:

JUNE 28, 2017

EDISON — Donna Chiera, president of the American Federation of Teachers New Jersey (AFTNJ), released the following endorsement today supporting Senate President Steve Sweeney for re-election to the New Jersey Senate:

“Few leaders in our state have had such a positive impact on public education as Senate President Steve Sweeney. Senator Sweeney has consistently exhibited leadership on so many of the critical and pressing educational issues affecting our state, and our union is proud to stand behind him.

“He is leading the charge on an equitable school aid reform proposal that will deliver $125 million in additional aid to struggling school districts, successfully negotiated a nearly $1 billion investment into our state’s higher education facilities, and has consistently fought to preserve and increase funding for important programs like the Educational Opportunity Fund.

“Put simply, Steve is a powerful force for public education in New Jersey. He is a pragmatic, pro-labor elected official who routinely puts what is right before what is easy. The men and women of AFTNJ are proud to stand with Senator Sweeney and wholeheartedly endorse him for re-election to the New Jersey Senate.”

The American Federation of Teachers New Jersey represents over 30,000 teachers, faculty and staff at all the four-year public colleges and universities, ten community colleges, and a number of large K-12 school districts in New Jersey. Learn more at www.aftnj.org
