New Jersey Lawmakers Graded on their Votes in Trenton

TRENTON, N.J. – Americans for Prosperity-New Jersey (AFP-NJ) today released its Taxpayer Scorecard for the 2016-17 legislative session. The Garden State’s leading free-market grassroots organization produces this comprehensive digest to educate New Jerseyans on how their state elected officials voted on over 40 of the most impactful bills from the 2016-17 legislative session, covering such issues as corporate welfare, occupational licensure reform, and pension funding.

Americans for Prosperity – New Jersey State Director Erica Jedynak provided the following statement:

“This year’s Scorecard let’s New Jerseyans know how legislators actually voted on the most important issues facing the state.

“New Jersey has the highest taxes in the nation and a host of important fiscal challenges that need to be addressed.  If we’re going to solve these problems, the people need to know what their legislators are up to in Trenton and this guide will help them do just that.  We looked at the largest bills affecting taxes, as well as policies that put up barriers to opportunity for New Jerseyans to be able to go to work, provide for their families, and lead meaningful lives here.

“We here at AFP-NJ will continue to do our part to push New Jersey government to confront the state’s looming problems in a way that doesn’t add additional taxes on taxpayers who are already overburdened.  As a former legislative staff member, I can say there are a lot of special interests pushing on lawmakers at any given time. The gas tax fight was a prime example of that. AFP will continue to be a voice for the taxpayer and a more affordable state.”

Background:

During the 2016-17 legislative session, AFP-NJ advocated for occupational licensing reforms to help remove barriers to opportunity for thousands of New Jerseyans and worked to protect taxpayers from burdensome tax hikes.

Seventeen lawmakers scored as a “Champion of the Taxpayer.” This award is given to lawmakers who acted in the best interest of their constituents by pursuing policies that advance economic freedom during the legislative session. In order to obtain this designation, legislators must score 90% or higher on the group’s Taxpayer Scorecard.

AFP-NJ is providing the scorecard to all members of the public, press, and lawmakers. The group will also be running digital ads to promote the scorecard. New Jerseyans can also access the scorecard through a website, TaxpayerScorecad.com, where they can easily download a PDF version of the entire scorecard.
