Analilia Mejia Condemns Arrests of Journalists Georgia Fort and Don Lemon

GLEN RIDGE, NJ — In response to Trump’s Department of Justice unveiling federal charges against journalists Georgia Fort and Don Lemon, who were covering the scene of a peaceful protest in a Minneapolis church, Analilia Mejia — Bernie Sanders and AOC-backed candidate for Congress — released the following statement:

“First Trump came for immigrants, and now they are going after journalists. Arresting journalists is fascism, period, full stop. It’s fascism when it’s done in Russia, and it’s fascism when it’s done here in the United States. Georgia Fort and Don Lemon, two prominent Black reporters, were arrested for simply doing their jobs. This has nothing to do with the law and everything to do with attacking the free press.

“Our country is crossing a bright red line and the fate of our democracy will be determined by how we respond to this moment. And yet, we still have Democrats tiptoeing their attacks on Trump, and folding on giving this administration more money for ICE. Democrats need to be aggressive and stand up for our democracy right now. We must use all levers to fight back. It’s time to abolish ICE, protect free speech, and fight for our democracy.”
