LaBruno receives unanimous backing from Dumont Democratic Committee and Council; has wide support among community leaders

DUMONT, NJ (March 21, 2019) — The Dumont Democratic Committee unanimously endorsed Councilman Andrew LaBruno as their nominee for Mayor of Dumont at their March 20th committee meeting. LaBruno, 37, was first elected to the Dumont Borough Council in 2017 and has spearheaded initiatives to build a more-inclusive community and a transparent governing body.

“Andrew has the deep knowledge and leadership skills necessary to move Dumont forward,” said Rafael Riquelme, former Dumont Councilman and Municipal Chair of the Dumont Democratic Committee. “I have known Andrew for years and I cannot think of a better person to lead the borough. Andrew’s experience founding the Dumont Community Group, and now on the Council, makes him a compelling candidate. Andrew sees the potential in Dumont and has a vision to capture it.”

LaBruno is the Founder and President of the Dumont Community Group, a community-led non-profit that organizes free recreational events throughout the year. The Dumont Community Group hosts the annual Dumont 5-K, a borough-wide garage sale, movies in the park, networking events, and has donated close to $10,000 to families facing hardship. The Dumont Community Group is widely recognized throughout the borough as a force for positive change.

“I believe in the borough of Dumont, our families, and our future — that’s why I am thrilled to announce that I am running for Mayor,” said Andrew LaBruno, Dumont Councilman and Democratic nominee for Mayor. “I am a firm believer in giving back to the community, and I have seen first hand what Dumont can accomplish when residents work together behind a shared goal. I pledge to run a positive campaign that focuses on building a prosperous Dumont, including the revitalization and development of our business districts, improving our roads and infrastructure, enhancing our parks and recreation programs, and stabilizing taxes. I sincerely want to thank my wife and children, the Dumont Democratic Committee, and my colleagues on the council for joining me in this movement to move Dumont forward.”

LaBruno will join a unified Democratic slate with Councilwoman Lisa Sabatino Rossillo and Conor Gorman, who is seeking his first term on the Borough Council.

“I am honored to have the support of the Dumont Democratic Committee in my campaign for reelection,” said Dumont Councilwoman Lisa Rossillo. “The Dumont Borough Council has made incredible progress over the last year in finalizing plans for a new municipal complex and police department. I look forward to continuing that progress and campaigning with Andrew and Conor.”

Councilwoman Lisa Rossillo is a teacher in the Fairview public school system. Rossillo was appointed to the council in 2018 and was elected to fill a one-year unexpired term in November 2018. Conor Gormon, a first time candidate for public office, is a member of the Dumont Elks Club and serves as an aide to Bergen County Freeholder Steve Tanelli.

“As a proud product of Dumont’s public schools and recreation programs, it is a true honor to be nominated as a candidate for Dumont Council,” said Conor Gormon, first time candidate for Dumont Council. “There is no Democratic or Republican way of local governing — it’s about providing the best services at the best value for Dumont’s taxpayers, and we pledge to do just that. I am thrilled to join Andrew and Lisa on the ticket and to fight for local initiatives that benefit all of the borough’s families.”

As Councilman, LaBruno chairs a committee overseeing the construction of the new borough hall complex. He was also instrumental in the first round of police promotions since 2013. In 2019, LaBruno spearheaded the establishment of Dumont’s Economic Development Committee, fulfilling a major promise made in his council campaign platform.

“Andrew is a tireless public servant who is deeply invested in making Dumont a thriving community,” said Stacey Vassallo, longtime Dumont resident and Vice President of the Dumont Community Group. “His volunteer service is commendable, and the community is stronger from the initiatives he has spearheaded. Andrew not only talks the talk, but walks the walk — and most importantly, he empowers those around him to be the change they want to see in Dumont.”

Andrew LaBruno’s community involvement started several years ago when he coached Dumont Little League and Recreation Flag Football. Professionally, LaBruno has over 18 years of experience in law enforcement and currently serves as Detective with the Jersey City Police Department.

“I’ve lived in Dumont my entire life, and it’s not often that someone like Andrew steps up to put our community first,” said Michael Petriello, lifelong Dumont resident and Vice President of Dumont Little League. “Andrew has it all: he is a true leader, has a clear vision, and a track-record of success in giving back to the borough and its families.
