Assembly Approves Timberlake, McKnight & Vainieri Huttle Bill to Keep Renters Informed of Area Construction, Demolition Projects
(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblywomen Britnee Timberlake, Angela McKnight, and Valerie Vainieri Huttle to ensure tenants are kept informed when a landlord receives written notice of hazardous work on an adjoining property, including but not limited to, construction, rehabilitation, or demolition cleared the full Assembly Monday, 74-0.
Under the bill (A-3593), the landlord would be required to provide a copy of the notice to tenants of the landlord’s property within five business days of the landlord’s receipt of the written notice.
“Lengthy construction projects can cause environmental and health hazards for residents living in the vicinity. Residents should be made aware quickly so they can make necessary accommodations in these circumstances. Active construction may cause damage, hazardous areas, or other inconveniences to their home or neighborhood; and, for individuals with medical conditions, demolition or construction raise health concerns. The legislation will help to ensure landlords keep renters informed about any work near their home that will impact their health or families’ health.”
The bill will now go to the Senate for further review.
