Assembly Committee Holds Hearing on Proposed Veteran Property Tax Deduction Legislation

            (TRENTON) – In order to recognize and assist veterans independent of their combat experience, a proposed resolution would extend an existing property tax deduction to veterans who did not serve in a time of war or emergency. New Jersey residents had the opportunity to share their perspectives on the legislation during a public hearing at the state house on Friday.

Chairwoman Cleopatra Tucker (D-Essex) led members of the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee in receiving testimony on the resolution (ACR-57) she and fellow Assembly Democrats Daniel Benson (D-Mercer, Middlesex), Pamela Lampitt (D-Camden, Burlington) and Wayne DeAngelo (D-Mercer, Middlesex) sponsor.

As per the constitution, veterans who served during a time of war or emergency are able to receive a $250 property tax deduction. This legislation would extend eligibility for the existing deduction to honorably discharged veterans who did not have the opportunity to serve during a time of war or emergency.

If the measure is approved at the legislative level, the proposed constitutional amendment will be placed on the ballot for a public vote during the next election.

“Even if a soldier never saw combat during their time in the military, simply signing up to protect their fellow Americans was an act of courage that should be recognized,” said Assemblywoman Tucker. “No matter what role they serve, every member of the military contributes to its operations and allows it to function in defense of our country.”

“It was an honor to participate in today’s hearing on this legislation,” said Assemblyman Joseph Danielsen (D-Middlesex, Somerset). “As a veteran myself, I believe our country must continue to do more to help our former military members. A gesture like this is only appropriate for all that veterans go through in service to this country.”

“Through my involvement with veterans’ services organizations over the years, I have learned that this is something many veterans have wanted for a long time,” said Assemblyman Herb Conaway. “Hopefully when this proposal reaches the voters, they will view it favorably and recognize the sacrifices of all those who defended our country.”

The resolution will now go to the Assembly Speaker for further consideration.
