Assemblyman Jerry Walker Commends Elected Leaders and Frontline Workers for Ensuring 24/7 Operation of Kearny Warming Center During Extreme Cold

Kearny, NJ — As dangerously cold temperatures continue to impact communities across New Jersey along with the upcoming snow storm, Assemblyman Jerry Walker today recognized the collective efforts of federal, state, and local leaders, as well as frontline workers and volunteers, for their commitment to keeping residents safe through the continued operation of the Kearny Warming Center.
Assemblyman Walker thanked Governor Mikie Sherrill, Congressman Rob Menendez, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy, Kearny Mayor Carol Jean Doyle, Assemblyman Sampson, and other local and state elected officials for visiting the facility and demonstrating unified leadership during a critical time for vulnerable populations.
The Kearny Warming Center is currently the only warming center in the State of New Jersey operating 24 hours a day, and it will remain open continuously through next Saturday, including full daytime hours. This expanded operation ensures that individuals experiencing homelessness, seniors, and residents facing heating insecurity have uninterrupted access to warmth, safety, and essential support services.
“At a time when extreme cold can be life-threatening, the Kearny Warming Center stands as a vital lifeline for our community,” said Assemblyman Walker. “I am deeply grateful to Governor Sherrill, Congressman Menendez, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy, Mayor Doyle, Assemblyman Sampson, and all of our partners in government for coming together with urgency and compassion to ensure no one is left out in the cold.”
In addition to elected leadership, Assemblyman Walker emphasized the critical role of frontline staff, volunteers, and service providers who are staffing the center around the clock.
“The true heroes of this effort are the workers and volunteers who are on-site day and night,” Walker said. “Their dedication, professionalism, and humanity make it possible for this center to operate safely 24 hours a day. They are providing not just warmth, but dignity, care, and reassurance to those who need it most.”
The Kearny Warming Center’s extended schedule reflects a coordinated response to extreme weather conditions and highlights the importance of collaboration between municipal leadership, state officials, federal partners, and community-based organizations.
Assemblyman Walker also urged residents, advocates, and service providers to help spread the word about available resources.
“If you or someone you know needs a warm, safe place during this cold weather, help is available,” Walker added. “Please call 211 to be connected with immediate assistance and additional support services.”
Assemblyman Walker reaffirmed his ongoing commitment to working with all levels of government to protect public health and safety and to ensure that essential emergency resources remain accessible to those most in need.
