Assemblyman John Allen Backs State Legislation to Reaffirm Access to In Vitro Fertilization in the Wake of the Alabama Supreme Court Decision and Federal Efforts to Restrict It

Assemblyman John Allen today announced his support for AR 122, a legislative resolution that reaffirms the protections of access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other reproductive health care services in New Jersey.  The resolution condemns the Alabama Supreme Court ruling in LePage v. Mobile Infirmary Clinic, P.C. and pending federal legislation, H.R.431, both of which in effect restrict the availability of in vitro fertilization.  Serving as a substitute member of the Assembly State and Local Government Committee, Assemblyman Allen cast one of the majority votes yesterday that successfully advanced this reproductive rights resolution out of the committee and moved it closer to a floor vote.

“With IVF now under threat nationally, it is important that New Jersey reaffirms its support for the right to build families through hope and science,” said John Allen.  “Access to this procedure is a fundamental pathway in the pursuit of parenthood for countless individuals.”

New Jersey has the second highest rate of babies conceived through IVF in the nation.  More than 4,000 babies–nearly 1 in every 25—–that are born in our state each year are conceived through IVF, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mr. Allen praised his fellow 32nd district Assembly person, Jessica Ramirez for sponsoring the resolution and noted that this resolution sets a powerful example for the nation, putting New Jersey at the forefront of championing the cause of reproductive freedom and access to IVF for all.

Elected to his first term in the Assembly in November, John Allen represents Hoboken and parts of Jersey City.
