Assemblywoman Sumter on the Fragility of Democracy

LD35 Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter of Paterson

The Fragility of Democracy

The dichotomy of a moment of joy and sadness in 24 hours.  Waking up to the news that Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff were winners in Georgia for the U.S. Senate and that Madam Stacey Abrams name would live rent free in the mind of President 45.

Yesterday afternoon became dark and sad for our country where we watched in horror as the leader of the free world, incited a mob to storm the U.S. Capitol.  Witnessing the rise of people with less melanin toned skin being allowed to make it into the halls of Congress to destroy windows and in their minds respond to the call to action to stop democracy.

This was intolerable and I join in calling on Congress and the Senate to invoke the 25th Amendment for the removal of the 45th President now.  Democracy is ours and yes we learned in 4 years that it is fragile.  Zero election fraud for this past election during an unprecedented pandemic.

While watching the television in disbelief, and praying fervently I texted the NJ delegation members to offer prayers for their safety.  Witnessing a mob storm through the doors where my family and I toured as a guest of Rep. Bill Pascrell from my district.  Seeing members taking cover under the desks for safety.  My heart was constricted and I was holding my breath for the safety of all such as Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman.  Rep. Mikie Sherrill who was just on the news that morning walking through the steps of the Electoral College process for the day.  Worried that harm had raided the very space where our delegation of leaders where working for us.

In spite of this act of domestic terrorism, Congress and the Senate performed their elected duty to confirm the victory of  President Elect Biden and Vice-President Elect Harris.

Here is the other strength of our democracy, Vice President Pence made the declaration of Biden Harris’s victory!

The greatness of America does not belong to hate, but it belongs to us!
