Atlantic City, NJ – On Wednesday, January 9th, the Atlantic City Women’s March Leadership Team led by The Root.com Top 100 Influential African Americans of 2018, Atlantic County Freeholder Ashley Bennett (District 3) will make an exciting and  MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT regarding the march and rally on Wednesday January 9, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Boardwalk Hall.  The rally will feature the talent of internationally acclaimed poet, playwright and performance artist/activist Jessica Care Moore. Moore is the CEO of Moore Black Press and the Executive Producer of Black WOMEN Rock and founder of the literacy -driven Jess Care Moore Foundation. A diverse line up of powerhouse and empowering speakers has been put together, ending with a keynote by New Jersey Lt. Governor Sheila Y. Oliver. When asked why it was so important to have the 2019 march honor Civil Rights Icon Fannie Lou Hamer, Freeholder Ashley Bennett responded without hesitation, “Atlantic County and in this particular case, Atlantic City is so full of amazing history that everyone throughout the entire state should be made aware of.  The mere fact that this is the 55th Anniversary of Fannie Lou Hamer challenging the validity and authority of Jim Crow era on a national stage and the 50th Anniversary of Shirley Chisholm elected to congress during the same time the 116th Congress of the United States of America just swore in a record number of women and women of color is thrilling and amazing that Atlantic City has such a deep rooted connection to this part of women’s history.”

The Atlantic City Women’s march has brought together an exciting coalition of grassroots groups, labor and faith based organizations unlike anything the state has ever witnessed before.  “There is a special type of excitement and eclectic buzz surrounding the coming together of these phenomenal groups and diverse women from across the state of New Jersey. There is so much history for women, the labor movement and civil rights movement right on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, particularly at the venue of the march. Our Union is so very honored and thrilled to be a part of this moment of history in our great state” said Estina Baker, National Staff, Senior Campaign Lead for Communications Workers of America-NJ and Senior Advisor to the Leadership Team.   Uyen “Winn” Khuong, Executive Director of Action Together-NJ and March Co-Sponsor shared her personal thoughts about the march, “As a community organizer and grassroots activist , I am humbled to be able to participate in this March to honor the legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer, a giant in civil rights that all New Jerseyans should know about.  Her life’s work to the causes of registering voter, opening business opportunities for minorities, and providing childcare for families are causes that we still need to continue to fight for today.  To be able to march alongside others in this cause honoring this iconic woman is one I’m honored to be a part of.”
