ATLANTIC DEMOCRATS FILE SUIT TO PROTECT VOTERS’ RIGHTS
(MAYS LANDING) Today, the Atlantic County Democratic Committee filed for an Order to Show Cause in Superior Court against The Woodlands condominium complex in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, seeking an injunction to allow office holders and candidates to speak with voters one-on-one.

“The ability of voters to talk with office holders and candidates in-person about the issues they care about has been a bedrock of American law,” said Robert D. Herman, Esq., the attorney representing the Atlantic County Democratic Committee. “The ability to be heard is one of the pre-eminent and fundamental rights guaranteed by the United States and New Jersey Constitutions.”

The Woodlands has a history of limiting residents’ access to political office holders, candidates, and information.  Recently, an incumbent running for re-election and his campaign staffer were confronted by The Woodlands for knocking on doors and talking to voters. The candidate and volunteer were forced to leave, in essence cutting off residents’ ability to talk directly with candidates about this important upcoming election and express their concerns.

“This is not a Republican or Democratic issue,” said Herman. “Politicians should have the opportunity to speak directly with voters and vice-versa.” “People’s voices should be heard,” Herman continued, “We want more people engaged, not less.”

It is unfortunate that some want to prevent the public from hearing from their current or prospective elected officials. It is my hope that the Republicans will join us in this effort, and I am confident we will ultimately prevail so we can get back to talking to citizens about our vision for Atlantic County.”
