Says Donation of Socks Can Help Community Members in Need

A resolution sponsored by Senator Kip that designates February 14 of each year as “Socks for the Homeless Day” was signed into law. The measure is designed to raise awareness of homelessness and the ongoing need for socks by children, adults, and families without homes.

“A pair of clean, dry socks can be a sign of hope for children and families suffering from homelessness,” said Bateman (R-16). “During the coldest winter month, a donation of socks can prevent hypothermia and injuries which untreated can lead to further health problems.”

Currently, it is estimated that over 8,500 individuals are homeless in New Jersey, many which are in need of clean dry socks to protect their feet.

The resolution, SJR-17, aims to increase awareness of many challenges and dangers that homeless individuals face and provides an annual statewide campaign to observe “Socks for the Homeless Day.”

In related news, Bateman and Senator Kristin Corrado launched a “Socks for Soldiers” collection drive, acknowledging that socks are an essential basic need for all.

“Teaching our children and friends about the impact of donating can help bring awareness to those in need,” said Bateman. “A small donation can go a long way in helping many people in our community.”

Senator Bateman said that a gift of socks can be donated to both his District Office or at a Joy of Sox location.
