Bramnick remains opposed to marriages under 18 years of age

TRENTON, N.J. – Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick has the toughest legislation to stop these marriages that can become law.

“I ask all supporters of the law to ban underage marriages to join with me to get it passed now,” said Bramnick (R-Union).

Bramnick introduced legislation to stop child marriage in New Jersey with extremely tough standards and a difficult burden of proof that will make child marriage almost impossible.

The bill (A4883) would bar those under age 16 from marrying or entering into a civil union, and only allow those age 16 and 17 to marry if a Superior Court judge finds by clear and convincing evidence that a denial would result in substantial harm to the minor.  Substantial harm would be an extremely difficult standard to meet.
