Brian Varela (NJ-07) Statement in Response to Fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

Morris County, NJ (January 7, 2026) - Today, Brian Varela, a Democrat running for New Jersey's 7th Congressional District, released the following statement in response to the fatal shooting by an ICE office in Minneapolis, MN:

“I am disgusted and outraged by ICE’s continued cruel and lawless acts of inhumanity that have led to the senseless loss of an innocent life today. This tragic death was a direct consequence of ICE’s draconian and reckless immigration enforcement crackdown. This woman was not a threat, she was not a danger, she was a good samaritan bearing witness and watching out for her immigrant neighbors. What America saw today was unfortunately foreseeable. It was only a matter of time that something this horrific and tragic occurred, as ICE agents continue to terrorize our neighborhoods, and invade our towns and cities under the guise of ‘enforcement.’

“The Department of Homeland Security is now lying to the American people, as they try to cover up this criminal act, by falsely stating that this was self-defense, and by degrading the innocent bystander by describing her as a domestic terrorist. They should be ashamed of themselves. Eyewitness videos prove that this targeted shooting was malevolent and intentional. There must be an immediate investigation to ensure all facts come to light, and the ICE agent responsible is held accountable.

“As someone who has stood on the front lines of the demonstrations with peaceful protesters wanting an end to the ICE terror raids, I have seen firsthand the fear our communities face every day. Today’s tragedy proved that the Department of Homeland Security will target and shoot down anyone, even U.S. citizens, if you stand in their way. ICE’s dangerous tactics pose a danger to all neighborhoods, including ours in NJ-7.

“That is why I am running for Congress - because we need leaders who will fight for their neighbors, and help keep our communities safe. I call on Tom Kean Jr., to join me in denouncing this tragic violent act by DHS ICE agents, stop Trump‘s inhumane and divisive, immigration agenda, and help return New Jersey to the decent civil neighborly state we all deserve. If Rep. Kean is too afraid to do so, he does not deserve to represent the good people of NJ-07.
