Bridgewater Township Council Passes Resolution Calling for Transparency and Accountability on Unidentified Drone Activity
Bridgewater, NJ – December 19, 2024 – In response to increasing reports of unidentified drone activity across North and Central New Jersey, including Somerset County, the Bridgewater Township Council has unanimously passed a resolution demanding immediate clarity and decisive action from Federal and State authorities. This action underscores the community’s growing concern for public safety and the need for transparent communication about these incidents.
Over recent weeks, residents in eight counties, including Bridgewater Township, have reported sightings of unidentified drones over residential areas, commercial zones, military facilities, and critical infrastructure. Despite State and Federal legislative discussions on the matter, responses have been insufficient, leaving residents and local leaders frustrated by the lack of actionable information and public safety assurances.
“Vague statements such as ‘there is no known credible threat’ are not enough,” said Bridgewater Council President Tim Ring. “Our residents deserve clear answers and proactive measures to address this issue.”
The resolution passed by the Township Council calls on President Joseph Biden, Governor Phil Murphy, and relevant Federal and State agencies to:
- Provide a comprehensive and coordinated response to address the issue of unidentified drones.
- Ensure public safety through transparency, accountability, and decisive action.
- Investigate potential risks, especially given the proximity of Somerset County to areas frequented by the President-elect.
The resolution will be distributed to key officials and agencies, including the White House, Governor’s Office, New Jersey State Legislature, and Federal agencies such as the FBI, FAA, and Homeland Security.
Bridgewater Mayor Matthew Moench has been vocal about his concerns, participating in a call hosted by the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and meeting with other elected officials to advocate for greater transparency.
“Unfortunately, the briefing offered very little substantive information,” said Mayor Moench. “I will continue to monitor the situation and keep our residents informed. This is about protecting our families, privacy, and public safety.”
The Mayor also shared his personal experience with the issue, recounting a recent drone sighting in his own neighborhood. He emphasized the importance of Federal and State accountability, noting that Bridgewater’s proximity to areas frequented by the President-elect elevates potential risks.
The Township is working closely with local law enforcement and elected representatives, including Congressman Tom Kean and Senator Steinhardt, to coordinate advocacy efforts. Regular briefings with the Bridgewater Police Department are also underway to ensure preparedness in addressing potential incidents.
“The Bridgewater Township Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community,” said Bridgewater Police Chief John Mitzak. “We are continuously monitoring the situation and will respond appropriately to any verified incidents involving drones. Your cooperation and careful attention to the facts are essential in helping us maintain public safety and enforce the law.”
Mayor Moench and the Township Council urge residents to report any relevant information about drone sightings to the FBI at 1-800-225-5324 or online at tips.fbi.gov.
“This issue goes beyond one town,” said Bridgewater Councilman Filipe Pedroso. “It’s a statewide and national concern. We won’t stop until we have the accountability and action we need. Our community’s safety is our top priority, and we will continue to advocate for transparency and solutions.”
