Bucco Bill to Cut Wait Times at MVC Becomes Law

New Drivers Who Passed Road Test Can Operate a Car for 60 Days While Waiting for Provisional License

Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony M. Bucco to help alleviate long lines at New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission facilities across the state was signed into law Monday.

Governor Murphy endorsed Bucco’s bill, A-4442/S-2755, allowing new drivers who passed their road tests to drive for 60 days while they are waiting to get their probationary drivers’ license.

“The delays and congestion at MVC are frustrating and inexcusable,” said Bucco (R-25). “By delaying the requirement for every new driver to visit MVC in person to get a license, we can avoid negatively impacting the lines for motorists who need to conduct business in person. This sensible adjustment can help New Jersey residents get the services they need without forcing them to spend hours and days waiting in longer lines.”

The new law allows an individual who has passed the drivers’ license road test to operate a motor vehicle in New Jersey under the same conditions imposed on probationary drivers.  The authorization to operate a motor vehicle is valid until the 60th day after the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission resolves the driver licensure backlog.

“Eliminating the rush to get a provisional license will allow new drivers to get on the road safely, and arrange for their licenses after MVC has sorted out the current backlogs,” said Bucco. “I am proud to be a part of the bipartisan legislative solution to the problems our residents are experiencing at MVC facilities around the State.”
