In response to recent threats of violence at numerous Jewish community centers throughout the state and country, as well as the desecration of several Jewish cemeteries, Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen, Passaic) called for an end to the hatred and bigotry directed toward religious groups.

“As the representative of one of the largest Jewish communities in the state, these recent acts have left me sickened and heartbroken,” Senator Cardinale said. “These violent threats and displays of hatred have no place in our state or in our country.”

According to news reports, several Jewish community centers — including in Tenafly, which neighbors the 39th District — had to be evacuated after being targeted with bomb threats. It was just one of 21 such threats at Jewish community centers and schools reported on Monday.  Over the weekend, hundreds of headstones were knocked down at a Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia, just a few days after a similar incident near St. Louis.

Cardinale announced he will sponsor a resolution to condemn these kinds of hateful acts and show support for New Jersey’s Jewish community, as well as other religious communities throughout the state.

“These incidents of religious intolerance are disturbing and illegal,” Senator Cardinale said. “I and the rest of my colleagues in the legislature are committed to protecting the religious freedoms of all New Jerseyans, and we’ll support the efforts of law enforcement to investigate and prosecute these crimes.”
