Allendale residents file petitions to bring new leadership to governing body
(Allendale, New Jersey) – Yesterday, Allendale residents Carolina Curbelo, Brian Murphy, and Maureen Shaw filed petitions to run for the mayor and council seats being contested in the 2018 November General Election. Carolina Curbelo is a lifelong Allendale resident, immigration attorney, and small business owner seeking a four year term for Mayor. Brian Murphy is the Honors College Director and Associate Professor at Rutgers University in Newark. Maureen Shaw is a communications professional and published author, writing primarily on women’s rights issues. Murphy and Shaw are seeking three year terms to the Borough Council.
“I am running for Mayor because I love my hometown of Allendale and want to make our governing body more responsive and effective for our residents,” stated Curbelo. “We need visionaries who bring new leadership and new energy to our local government, not the complacency and business as usual approach that we are getting. For the first time in many decades, Allendale residents are going to be given a choice of who should lead our town, and I am confident that Brian, Maureen, and I bring the experience and skills necessary to streamline our government while making strategic investments in our parks, infrastructure, and senior services.”
- Carolina Curbelo is an immigration attorney with a general practice located in East Hanover, New Jersey. She is a graduate of Vermont Law School and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University. Curbelo is married to Jose Diaz and has two children Manuel and Penelope. She is also a graduate of Northern Highlands Regional High School.
- Brian Murphy is the Honors College Director at Rutgers University in Newark and holds a PhD from the University of Virginia and Bachelor of Arts from Haverford College in Pennsylvania. Murphy is married to Sarah Breckenridge and has two children, Seamus, 6, a first-grader at Hillside, and Catriona, 4, who will start kindergarten at Hillside this fall. Since joining Rutgers, Murphy led an inclusive strategic planning process to overhaul and relaunch the Honors College and develop partnerships between the University and local organizations throughout North Jersey. A former legislative aide and journalist, Murphy is an award-winning author, historian and an Eagle Scout.
- Maureen Shaw is a freelance journalist with a Master of Arts from Columbia University and Bachelor of Arts from James Madison University. Shaw is married to Matthew Dornbush and has two children, Ellen and Ethan.
“As we listen to our neighbors in Allendale, too often we’ve heard complaints about services that are provided in neighboring towns but lacking in our own,” stated Murphy. “We are going to fight to adopt and strengthen shared service agreements that will provide curbside leaf and brush pick-up while holding the line on spending. We need outside-the-box thinking to find ways to improve and protect our open spaces and get our municipal services back up to par with those of other towns in northern Bergen County – something that will increase property values and make our quality of life even better for everyone in Allendale.”
“Our local government needs to be more accountable, more transparent, and communicate better with our residents,” stated Shaw. “We are going to fight for policies to keep our residents informed of how their tax dollars are being spent, and make sure every resident’s voice is heard when decisions are being made.”
