CITY OF NEWARK PARTNERS WITH UBER TO GIVE IMPACTED RESIDENTS

DISCOUNTED RIDES TO BOTTLED WATER DISTRIBUTION CENTERS

Ride sharing service making it easier for residents in Pequannock service area to obtain bottled water

Newark, NJ – August 29, 2019 – The City of Newark and Uber today announced a new partnership to assist Newark families in the Pequannock service area with discounted rides to water distribution centers. The City is working on a plan to deliver water to residents. Until then, Uber is helping the City ensure residents have access to clean, safe water.

“I would like to thank our friends at Uber for providing Newark families in the Pequannock service area with a way to access safe drinking water,” said Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “Protecting our residents is our top priority. We are doing everything we can to address this issue and are grateful for the support of all of our community, corporate, statewide and national partners during this time.”

Residents in the Pequannock Service Area can use code NWK20 for discounted rides to water distribution centers. The code is valid for up to four rides per user and $20 per ride. Residents will be driven to and from the following distribution centers during their hours of operation:

• From 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday:
  • The City of Newark Department of Health and Wellness, 110 William Street
  • Pregnant mothers and residents who are on WIC are advised to go to the Department of Health and Wellness

• From 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday:
  • Bo Porter Sports Complex, 378 Lyons Avenue
  • Boylan Street Recreation Center, 916 South Orange Avenue
  • Vince Lombardi Center, 201 Bloomfield Avenue
  • Pregnant mothers and residents who are on WIC are advised to go to the Department of Health and Wellness

If residents would like to determine their eligibility for bottled water, they may use the mapping tool on www.NewarkLeadServiceLine.com. Bottled water will be available while the City continues to conduct extensive testing with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). When additional testing results are complete, the City, the NJDEP and the EPA will evaluate the data and identify the required corrective action as quickly as possible.
