CITY OF PATERSON CONTINUES TO TAKE GUNS OFF THE STREETS
Total number of guns confiscated thus far surpass total of previous years.
Gun violence has been a debilitating issue in the City of Paterson, but the Paterson Police Department has been working diligently to get guns off the streets. Since January 2020, the Paterson PD have recovered 155 guns, surpassing the total number seized in 2019 and 2018. In 2019 Paterson PD seized 141 guns and in 2018, 154 guns were confiscated.
The City of Paterson has been riddled with gun violence. Mayor Andre Sayegh and the Public Safety Division have taken active roles in condemning these acts. Mayor Sayegh is a member of Everytown’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, which advocates for life-saving gun safety reforms. Earlier this year, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund issued grants to the Street Keepers and the Paterson Ceasefire Unit, groups that promote local gun violence prevention efforts.
Mayor Sayegh and the Public Safety Division have also joined forces with the anti-violence initiative, Paterson Men Stand Up (PMSU). PMSU focuses on the goal to combat violent and senseless crime through services, treatment and opportunity. Together they are addressing the ongoing surge in violence going on in the city.
“This is a significant step toward a better quality of life for Patersonians,” said Mayor Andre Sayegh. “I commend the hard work of our law enforcement as they have consistently prioritized the safety of our community. We will continue to get guns off our streets as swiftly as possible. The safety of Patersonians is paramount.”
